Standardized field sobriety tests

Field sobriety tests have been used by police officers for decades. These studies were developed as a method of testing suspected drunk driver on the sides of roads after it was stopped. For many years there has been no standardized testing procedures. Officers used what they felt were necessary investigations to test successfully intoxication.

At the end of 1970, decided the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA) to conduct a studyeffectiveness of different test methods identified in the field actually intoxicated drivers. Two studies were conducted in 1977 and 1981. The NHTSA concluded that a battery of three tests, when administered together, the most successful in targeting the drivers were drunk. These tests are as standardized tests known field sobriety "(SFSTs).

Standardized Tests

There are three standardized sobriety field tests. The officials arebe encouraged to take training in effective management of these tests in assessing the level of suspicion of intoxication, and the collection of evidence relevant for use in court.
